Is it possible to either set the images within the masonry gallery to crop so they fit evenly instead of get squashed down or to make the overall height uneven?
I have tried to use the CSS code in the support article regarding this but it doesn't seem to change anything.
Is there a way to crop the preview sizes to fit the dimensions recommended in the theme but then the lightbox display the original intended image sizes?

Sorry for the Weekend Delay. No i am afraid you will have to resize your images as per the Dimensions recommended in the Theme .

If not try this :
Add this into the Custom CSS box located in your Salient Options panel (Make Sure there are no red cross in the Box) :
