Random crash / Where can we find custom CSS?

Over the weekend, our website has gone down with a HTTP 500 error.

We've made a clone and are currently troubleshooting on an offline version.

I've gone into the database and reactivated a default theme 'twentyseventeen' and that has restored the website.

Whenever we try and live preview the current version of Salient, we get a white screen and the site breaks again.

We are looking to recover our custom Salient options along with our the custom CSS that we've applied overtime. Our plan is to re-install Salient with the updated version, but fear that we have lost a significant amount of custom code.

If we can't recover the site in its current state, how can we extract the custom CSS that we have applied. Is it found in anyone of the theme files?

    Thanks,

    Hey Again,

Please check for server php errors using this guide: http://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/your-complete-guide-to-troubleshooting-wordpress/ . It would be best to contact the hosting provider and have them look into this as they are aware of the Server Configuration Details .

    Hi Tahir,

We contacted our hosting provider who informed that it is an issue with the theme and not the hosting. There are also no major php errors found in the error log, only a few from Postman SMTP which is deprecated.

When reverting the site to a default theme such as 'twentyseventeen' the issue went away.

    Many thanks,

Did you have any Security Plugins Installed. Its possible your site was attacked.

Please update to Salient Theme Version 8.5.3 and Salient VC 5.2.4.

If you are not seeing the Plugin Update Notification you need to uncheck the " Disable Theme Reccomended Plugin Notifications " Field in "Salient Theme Options Panel"  -> General Settings -> "Toggle Theme Features" Section .

To get a list of Bug Fixes and new Feature addons in the Latest Theme update,  the changelog can be viewed here : http://themenectar.com/changelogs/salient.html .

Update the theme by following this guide: http://themenectar.com/docs/salient/updating-salient/ .

    Best.

Is there any way we can recover our custom CSS? In the past, when we have updated the theme, we have lost custom CSS stored across our pages.

Is this data available in a particular PHP or CSS file in the Salient theme directory?

Once we can recover the custom CSS we will update the to latest version.

    Many thanks,

    Hey Again,

Where exactly did you save the Css?  . If its inside the page content or Custom Css area in the Salient Theme Options Panel then its saved in the Database changing the Theme files wont remove it .

    Hey Again,

Try replacing the functions.php file from a new copy . The error seems to be caused by editing the original file.

    Hi again,

We replaced the functions.php with a new copy, the website worked for a few seconds then began to show the same syntax error from our previous reply.

    Many thanks,

    Hi Tahir,

Thanks for the article, but can you please give us some more information on why you think our website has been hacked? etc.

    Many thanks,

There is a possibility of it otherwise the File wont get Corrupt by itself . Please contact the hosting provider as they would best be able to guide you in this matter.
