Hi. I'd like to make the height of the items in my portfolio uneven, so that I can upload work at any aspect ratio and not have to worry about cropping it to a certain aspect ratio.

This would mean that the bottom of the portfolio would be 'ragged', so that the content flows down in columns, rather than being constrained to fixed-height rows.
