Seems like some sort of plugin conflict. Have you tried plugin compatibility test. Please try deactivating your third party plugins one by one while clearing your cache each time in order to figure out if one of them is causing this.
I've actually tried other contact form plugins as well, and same issue- takes forever to send/process on all of them.
I disabled all plugins, as well as the theme, with same result. In that case I'm thinking its some kind of server issue, so having the host look into it.

I found an interim solution, I installed CF7 4.7 and it works fine.

Did the updated version of contact form 7 refuse to work?
Can you please give us a temporary admin access to your site? We'll be in a better place to spot anything suspicious from here.
