1) That layout does not allow for full width as the structure of the page is changed and the navigation menu on the left is permanent.
2) The grey on the left is the area created for the header i.e. the left header layout.
The layout is created to the permanent i.e. since the header is not there and is replaced by the left header layout it made permanent and the rest is where the content will go.
It's the structure of the page based on the header layout you choose. You can opt for another layout if you want to get the full background and remove the sidebar \ side navigation header area.

The theme just updated. Please update to Salient Theme Version 8.5.4 and VC to 5.2.4.
