Google indexing problem with Salient

All of my pages with salient are not indexing the description tag. Instead it indexes with "Initializing... stage: 320x240 file: http://crowdenergy.org/wp-content/uploads/ocean-energy.mp4 autoplay: false preload: none isvideo: true smoothing: false ..." as the description. so i did a google for :"salient theme Initializing... stage" and it seems to be a common problem among hundreds of salient theme pages. How can I fix this as it is hurting my page ranking? Thank you

    Hey Todd,

there's also over two million results for sites that just have

    Initializing... stage

fin their description without using Salient - it's not something the theme is adding directly. It's just what occurs naturally if you don't define your own meta description tag and are using videos (Google pulls the first peice of your content). Get your Yoast SEO and add your own meta tags in - Google will update within a couple days.

    Cheers :)

I put yoast on the site weeks ago and still get this result. I'm going to pub con and want to show off the site but the seo has not been good…

    Hey Steve,

when I initially wrote this response I was unaware of the new way Google handles descriptions. Please see my conversation between mzuker here for all the information you may need:

Also here's a bing search for your URL to show the description meta tag has indeed been set correctly & here's a Google search for your site but including keywords along with the URL (you'll see the description changes) https://www.google.com/#q=schadt+Responsive+and+Ni...

Do you think you can fix this google result issue? A bad snippet on google is a big problem for selling SEO/WEB services using this theme... I'm getting that result pretty frequently.

I have to say I'm concerned about search performance. Please address search and google - no matter how beautiful a theme is if it's not getting found it's a big problem to all the pros that use it. If you can focus on SEO it will really improve the theme.

    Thanks!

Hey Steve, there's nothing that I'm aware of that can be done about this - it's not something that's missing from the theme, it's just how Google changed to handle their descriptions (dynamically based on what is searched). When searching for a raw URL which people don't tend to do often (since they would just go directly to the site in the first place if they knew the URL) the first part of the page content is used as the description. The description will change based on what you search though as I showed above so searching for keywords will yeild an entirely different description.

I've attached a screenshot to provide another example of this in action - i.e. Google ignoring the defined meta description and grabbing the first page content when searching directly for a URL.

    Cheers

Is there a way to put some text in front of this code to get the proper text result?

    Hey Aaron!

I am afraid Google here is the boss and we cant do much about it. As far as the theme is concerned its coded up correctly.

    Thanks

Guys what you all taking about?

To the topic starter - having <meta name="description" content="Ocean Energy - CrowdEnergy.org"/> pretty much name & url, this will not make you a good snippet in google by default. Even though it will look better depending on query.

Edit page, i see you already yoast plugin, and write descriptive descriptions for pages, like 2-3 pages.

If you meta descr will be about unrelated to page content, google can disregard it as well, but that's a different conversation.

Steve and you already have good snippets, same deal - what you have in your meta descr: Content Marketing - Photo - Video - We make amazing content - Powerful photography, cinematic video and real life success stories. It's the most powerful tool you have

    Hey Serge,

Salient used to use the WordPress default built in media player for video BG's (mediaElement) but it seemed Google would get hung up on the initialization of that and often pull that in over the desired entered meta desc - in v4.0 I removed that and opted for raw html5 video elements and it seems to have sorted the issue.

    Cheers :)
