I do not know how to update my version of Salient to the most current version of the theme. I have downloaded the file via Theme Forest and tried to add it to WordPress, but it says file already exists.
I have never updated the file and purchased over a year ago. Know I am not on current version.

An update is generally you replacing the theme files on the server with the newer version.
There are several methods of how to update listed here - http://themenectar.com/docs/salient/updating-salient/
We recommend the use of the easy theme upgrade plugin method as its the easiest.
Try that and let us know how it goes.
