I had tried updating the salient theme from 8.5.6 to 9.0.1 but noticed quite a few major issues with how it was affecting the layouts on my site.
I read through the forums and noticed that you defined that a minimum of PHP 7.1 was required for running 9.0.1.
I copied the site to staging, updated to PHP 7.2 and then re-ran the updates but Im still seeing major issues such as the slider not working correctly on the homepage and I also cant see m to run WProcket.
Im also the following error log on the front end of the site and CMS
Warning: Parameter 1 to wp_default_styles() expected to be a reference, value given in /nas/content/staging/gateonedev1/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php on line 286
Any ideas what might be happening? I'd love to be able to keep the site updated if possible.
Switching from the child to parent theme is the only thing that seems to help here although I lose all of my custom edits, sidebar edits and altered modules which isnt great.
What is the best way to ensure that a child theme is updated and all of the edit sport over intact?

The staging site is http://gateonedev1.staging.wpengine.com

Unfortunately there is no such code guide available . You will have to contact the Original Developer on how to proceed with the new update.
