Hey Jassi, very sorry for the delay! I've been on a short break since Thursday - thanks for your patience!

With the release of WordPress 3.6 the way galleries were handled had to be changed so this issue probably cropped up when your updated your WordPress version.
Also regarding your child theme query - yes, they're fully supported. I usually don't recommend overwriting during updates though, fully deleting the old theme folder and uploading the new one is preferred to avoid quirky conflicts. So just make sure to drag your custom file out of the theme before doing that :)
Please see screenshot: http://prntscr.com/325cc0 . I can see the doctype in there so i dont think that is an issue. You might want to play around with the Advanced settings on the plugin.
Also try these other tips:
Leverage browser caching
Reduce server response time
Enable compression
Optimize images
Those are the main points showing from pagespeed - so basically,
Grab yourself a caching plugin like W3 Total Cache (there's tutorial videos all over youtube on how to set it up)
Consider upgrading your host (opting for more power)
Contact your host and ask them to enable gzip compression
Make sure your images are web optimized meaning around 400kb or less
Taking these steps should yield a solid performance increase :)
