Thanks Tahir, we would prefer to use the existing SEO by Yoast plugin, as our site is aleady slowing down and I can't afford to install more plugins unless absolutely needed. Do you happen to know what might be using the conflict? We have other sites with the plugin install and a different theme, and everything is fine, leading me to think there is a conflict with Salient?
But then I deactivated the child theme and activated the salient theme. Suddenly I could see the sitemap. Afterwards I reactivated the child theme and it still worked.
When I go to generate our sitemaps I get the following error:
http://johnderuiter.com/sitemap_index.xml
Hey Samaz!

Hey Samaz!
It could be due to the minification plugin. Please try turning off them and then generating a sitemap.
Thanks

Hi,
I had the same problem. I always got the 404 error page when I tried to access the /sitemap_index.xml. I´m using the WordPress SEO plugin from Yoast.
i´ve deactivated all plugins, but no change. I also used the .htaccess hack from http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-fix-... But that also didn´t work.
But then I deactivated the child theme and activated the salient theme. Suddenly I could see the sitemap. Afterwards I reactivated the child theme and it still worked.
I hope this helps you along.
Hey Holger!
Thanks for posting back.
Cheers
