For some reason the short codes for buttons and icons do not work. They are not visible in the dummy files I imported nor when I add those elements to a new page/post. It seems like it should just work, but it doesn't. Any ideas, please?

I have found the reason—the Shortcodes plugin from X theme I used before, all seems to be good now.
