I need to be able to filter my blog posts by tag or something besides only categories because I use categories to differentiate my posts, and have news and events pertaining to particular portfolio items that need to appear on its own portfolio page and not others.

Unfortunately this will likely have to be custom coded and is not possible using the current Theme Options.
