Also, I'm looking to create a decent sliding gallery for my portfolio page and the current options don't appeal to me. Anyone have suggestions or perhaps a work around?
Try running your site through gtmetrix.com which will give you detailed report of what is causing the delay in loading your site. Also you can try Caching plugins such as W3Total Cache and Better Wordpress minify to speed up the site.
