I'm trying to change "previous/next project" title to "previous/next" in portfolio navigation. I've tried the "say what plugin" and it didn't work. another supporter said that you could change it in Function.php but it seems that the code structure is changed (that said they located in line 3000, but the last version of salient Function.php has only 233 line of code)

Did you enter salient-portfolio to text domain. Also note that you input correct original string.
