Yes you need to Install the Envato Market Plugin to update Salient via the WP Dashboard.
Please update to the Latest Salient Theme Version.
The current version of the theme is 13 and the current version of the page builder is 6.6. Salient versions older than v11 won't be compatible with WordPress 5.5.
Here's the documentation on the available methods for updating Salient: http://themenectar.com/docs/salient/updating-salient/#methods Once you've updated that, the update for the included page builder will become available. Note that "Visual Composer" also renamed their plugin on Envato to "WPbakery page builder" a couple of years back.
I still have support (yours I take it) for two of the Salient themes that I have purchased from Themeforest but my client's support is out of date, although I can go to his envato market account and download a zip file from there. My question is, what is the benefit of using the envato market update notification email link to their site if it is possible to simply update in WP, as it seems straight forward nowadays to update directly in the Dashboard, so do I also need to download the zip file from Envato Market?
Good evening, I saw that an update of the theme is active but this is not yet available in my installation in WordPress ...
How can I update it? Do you need to install a Themeforest plugin?

No, you don't have to download the zip if you have to configure the Envato Market Plugin correctly and can update it via the Dashboard.
