I'm having trouble here too. Tried to upgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.8.1 and broke my site.
Did it through FTP and I am on Wordpress 4.0
It turned my site completely blank like every image was gone, some things would show up, but it was like all formatting or the visual composer made everything not work.
Not sure what to do. But I don't want to upgrade until I'm more confident it won't break it.
You have a number of plugins that could be causing an conflict . Please try deactivating all third party plugins and activate them one by one to find the cluprit.
After upgrading to the latest version, the background images and colors are not displayed correctly.

Hey Jaun, make sure you update to 4.8.1 - these issues were sorted in that :)
