Hey!
Yes you can add it via Visual Composer. Simply add the components you want and then set that page in Woocommerce settings as the shop page.

Hmmm. That does not seem to work for me either. It just leaves a large blank area...

The large blank area means that its adding something in there. Make sure the element you are putting in there works on other pages .
