Try adding padding to the columns.

Yes, I tried that however that padding is applied to the top and bottom as well, not just left and right.
I know I can do it with adding extra css to a class, but I was just curious if there was something I was missing in the visual editor.

No i am afraid you would need to take the custom css route.
