Hello, Salient theme working well however video background not working in Safari. I have mp4, webM and OGV files without audio uploaded/linked. Have added codecs to .htaccess file. Allowed autolpay in Safari browser. Video background works fast in Brave, reasonably quick in Firefox. Does not play at all in Safari, just a play button and thumbnail and cannot even trigger the play button. Have deactivated unnecessary plugins in WP.
What are some other methods to force video background autoplay in Safari?
At the moment my website and video background are also playing in Safari Version 16.6 (18615.3.12.11.2)
So this is now resolved. Not sure what the issue was but it certainly is plying now. Thanks.
There is lag on the video in Safari but instant in Chrome/Firefox. Any tips to get the safari load in instant? And is there a way to tell if the Safari is playing the video background from the mp4 (vimeo), webM or OGV linked file?
Safari was still not allowing auto-play for a couple of days. I Kept googling as the issue seemed specific to my laptop and only the Safari browser.
Turns out in the Macbook laptop settings there is a a feature under the Battery menu called Low Power Mode. When turned on it blocks auto-play on Safari browser, even if you select allow auto-play in the safari menu - I guess to conserve power going to the graphics when rendering a website.
The trouble is - when Safari blocks the header background video, there is a play button in the centre of the screen but this is inaccessible. Other auto-play videos below on the webpage have a play button that is easy to see and access. So the full background header video is frozen on the first frame and ready to play - but impossible to play (there is a way to trigger it by playing any other video further down - but the user wouldn't know this)
Not sure if there would be a way to code around this by default in the next Salient version?
a) make the play button for header video accessible if Safari blocks autoplay and presents play button
b) if safari blocks auto-play - could salient detect this and force image or alt. media in place of video?

Hey there,
Thank you for reaching out to us.
Please have a look at this article to help you troubleshoot this:Troubleshooting Video Backgrounds.
I hope that helps.
Kind regards,
Thanks Andrew,
I have done both those methods in your trouble shooting doc.
I tried to indicate I hade done these steps already in my original post - but maybe I wasn't clear.
What are the next steps to get background video autoplay in Safari?
note: if I click on a lightbox video in my portfolio - That action will trigger the video background at top of page to play.
note: Your video background demo will not play in my Safari but will play in chrome https://themenectar.com/salient/architect/
Does your video background demo site https://themenectar.com/salient/architect/ work for you in Safari?
Hey Again,
Are you able to view this direct link in Safari : https://themenectar.com/salient/architect/wp-content/uploads/sites/38/2021/11/architect-landing2.mp4 ?. Also which version of Safari are you using ?.
Thanks.
