I uploaded images at 1000 x 667 px weighing under 100 KB but when they are resized to 768 x 512 px (so smaller size), they are resized and served at over 100 KB.
In this case, attached files, the image is orginally 88 KB large size but smaller version is 123 KB
When I insert an image box or a portfolio image or an image gallery I have the choice of the size of the image. So then the webp images are served instead of the full jpg image.
When I insert a background image I can only choose the full jpg image from the Media Library and the webp images are not served. Is there any way of choosing image size on image background to a header or to a column?
Is there any way of choosing image size on image background to a header or to a column? - no.
The best thing here would be to get the webp files served out instead of the jpg and if that is not happening maybe try to regenerate your thumbnails first.
I have regenerated my thumbnails but when added as a background image the theme always serves the fullsize image (jpg 1000 x667) and does not try to serve any of the smaller images (whether webp or jpg) when there are many other smaller sizes which would be more adequate to the size of the column.
I contacted support at Performance lab and did test with them and they were most helpful.
Thia is what was concluded. My webp full size image was not being served as I optimised my jpg images before uploading to Media Libary. Webp versions are created for thumbnails but the main image remains in jpg bacause less kb than the webp would be. SO to tst I uploaded a larger jpg , the webp was generated and served but never the thumbnails when it is a background image.

Appreciate the very clear update @aetekno. I checked your site and indeed the mentioned background image is displaying the WebP version.
With regarding the image-set images (different sized response images) not being used, these are background images requested via inline styling, and not images requested directly on the page load. I checked your other background images and I can see that it’s the same behavior for JPEG background images. As this is a visual composer block used for these background images you may wish to open a support topic with them on this.
Note also that if you use a standard image block as opposed to a visual composer block, you can add any of your WebP image now that they exist in in your media library. WordPress will use your different image-set images with WebP variations for this image block. It’s WordPress that defines the image-sets by default, either the primary image is a JPEG or WebP.
Let me know if you have any further questions with this."

Hi there,
Resizing of images uploaded to WordPress is done by WordPress and not the theme.
What we can try our image optimization guide here https://themenectar.com/docs/salient/performance-optimization-guide/#tab_64c8c562e493d to improve on this.
Cheers.
Thank you for the rapid reply. I'll look into that.

If that still does not work check with the performance lab plugin developers - https://wordpress.org/plugins/performance-lab/
Thanks.
Thank you for the reply

Hi there,
Could you check with the performance lab plugin developers - https://wordpress.org/plugins/performance-lab/ first just to see what they have to say on this?
Thanks.

So to conclude it is an issue with WPBakery Page Builder which is bundled in Salient theme so you might want to be aware of it
