Hey guys...once again appreciate your help. In the past I've simply been able to use the Post Portfolio Thumb plugin to crop in on my thumbnail exactly how I'd like, but the plug-in is way out of date and no longer works with the new version of WP. I've seen various tickets where you have suggested using Regenerate Thumbnails, but this plugin does not allow me to do custom croppings, and while I tried literally dozens of other plug-ins including the Image Generate and ReCrop, while I don't ever get any errors, none of them seem to be able to actually save the crop I select. Total Goose egg.
Without using a plugin, the WP theme itself traditionally allows me to go into the media > edit image > thumbnail setting and simply do a custom cropping and apply it only to the thumbnail, (see screenshot from this video) but for some reason I do not see this filed any longer in the image edit box in the salient theme (see screenshot)?
With all the imagery I'm trying to show, having the ability to do specific crops on each of my thumbnails is really important. Can you please let me know what you might recommend, why none of these thumbnail plug-ins work, and why I'm not able edit the thumbnail in the media gallery > edit image > crop thumbnail any longer?
I kindly request you to check for plugin conflicts.
To do this:
1. Deactivate one plugin at a time. 2. After deactivating each plugin, check if the issue persists. 3. If the problem disappears, you've likely identified the conflicting plugin.
Your cooperation in this matter will help us pinpoint and resolve the issue effectively.
Thanks for your help Judith. Can you specify which plug-in in particular you are recommending. Again, I've seen you guys recommend Regenerate Thumbnails, but this one in particular does not allow me to do specific croppings.
I was attempting to do the same on another Wordpress site using a much less sophisticated theme, however it does still have the built-in thumbnail setting functionality I previously referenced (see attachment) where you can crop an image and apply that just to the thumbnail. Has that functionally been stripped from Salient, or is there any type of work around to do it this way?
Thanks again for your continued help with this. :)
The functionality you are referring to is the Default WP Media Library feature and not linked to Salient. You can crop the images from the media library Menu in the WP Dashboard if you are not able to access it elsewhere.
As described in the original message, while I am able to crop an given IMAGE without any issues, I'm looking to perform specific cropping for THUMBNAIL of that image. The default wp functionality which allows me to do this does not appear to be present in the Salient theme as it is in other themes (as you mentioned), and as stated I was not able to get any plugin that allows you to specifically crop a thumbnail (like the Image Regenerate and Crop plugin) to work even after extensive troubleshooting including turning on / off other plug-ins that could be conflicting as Judith recommended. Again, I'm sorry to be so persistent about this, but it just seems like there is an easy solution we are missing here.
Please let me know if you guys have any other recommendations to accomplish a custom cropping for the thumbnail of any image. Thank you both again for the support!
However, the core WP team also released a plugin to re-enable that functionality: https://wordpress.org/plugins/edit-image-thumbnails-separately/ Their reasoning for removing that feature is listed in the plugin description - have you tried to use that plugin yet?
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This all makes sense now. Silly that WP would extract that functionality, but really appreciative of the clarification.

Hi Eric,
Thank you for getting back to us.
Allow me to escalate this to the developer to assist further with this.
We appreciate your patience with this.
Kind regards,
Hey Eric,
WordPress 6.3 remove the functionality to apply cropping to thumbnails only: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/6-3-can-no-longer-crop-thumbnail-only/
However, the core WP team also released a plugin to re-enable that functionality: https://wordpress.org/plugins/edit-image-thumbnails-separately/ Their reasoning for removing that feature is listed in the plugin description - have you tried to use that plugin yet?

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This all makes sense now. Silly that WP would extract that functionality, but really appreciative of the clarification.
