Hello I am creating a nextJS app that posts posts to wordpress via API. I noticed that on this site the featured image received in the payload is being automatically set as the header image which is great. However on other Salient sites this is not happening by default. Do you know where the setting in Salient is to control this?

Please check and confirm that you have not added a header image in the post header metabox settings. Here's a guide that you can read more on this from https://themenectar.com/docs/salient/post-metaboxes/
Also, check and confirm that you have activated this option in the Single Post Header Settings.
