The issue is probably mostly user error, but it would be good to see if I can work around it.
The issue is that I'm sometimes getting errors from Wordpress when I update a page. Sometimes there's no error message at all. The result is that all the work I've put into the visual composer is lost. The Wordpress auto save will save anything in the sidebar window, but not the visual composer.
The error message isn't really the mystery. I'm working on the site whenever I can, so that means windows stay open for long periods of time until I can get back to it. I think Wordpress is doing some kind of silent logout/timeout (I don't get prompted to log back in). So the user error fix would be to refresh the page before making changes, but I don't always remember to do that and losing two hours of work this morning was frustrating.
So, is there any way to generate saves of the visual composer?
