I realised under Portfolio Categories admin page, the portfolio categories are viewable with URL links. E.g. .../project-type/category-name/
And the layout of the these archives pages totally differ from my actual Portfolio page. Is this supposed to be visible on the front end? any way to hide it?

You can edit the archive page layout in the Salient > Portfolio > Archive.
As for removing the https://tribbe.co/wpnew/project-type/work/ archive page, unfortunately, we don't have a way to do this. I recommend using a redirect plugin to take users to your new URL.
