Chinese characters turned into question marks

    Hi there,

I was originally using Emphires as my website theme and later switched to Salient. When I was using Emphires, I used their testimonial plugin, but after switching, all the testimonials disappeared.

Before switching to Salient, I made a backup. To retrieve the testimonial data, I restored the backup, but all the Chinese characters turned into question marks.

I couldn't find a solution, so I recovered back to Salient, but the Chinese characters are still showing as question marks.

As I have switched back to Salient, all the testimonials disappeared again. My goal is still retrieve testimonial data, but now I need to fix the garbled characters first.

Is this issue caused by the theme, or is it a problem with WordPress.com?

    Many thanks,

    Hello there,

    Thanks for writing to us.

You can confirm whether this is a Salient issue or not by switching to a default WP theme such as Twenty Twenty to see whether the issue persists with the other themes.

Please let us know how this goes once you try.

I look forward to your response.

    Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch.

Try changing the font subsets in the Typography settings and let us know if this fixed the issue.

You can also try adding a custom font that supports Chinese characters and see if this resolves the issue. You can add it as in our guide https://themenectar.ticksy.com//article/9773/. Please ensure you don't have any browser extensions that are blocking font loading.

Try this and let us know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

Thank you guys for the prompt reply.

I switched to the WP theme, but the issue persists. I also tried the method Andrew provided, but it didn't resolve the problem.

I also noticed that the blog slider on the home page should display images, but now it appears as below.

I feel this might be an encoding issue, but since I'm using WordPress.com, I couldn't find a place to adjust it.

    Thanks,

    Hi there,

    Thanks for writing back.

From your findings, this means this is not a Salient issue as it persists with other themes as well. You can contact the testimonials plugins team to assist even further.

If you have any more questions or run into any problems, please feel free to reach out.

    Best regards,
