All of a sudden the portfolio pages give a 404 error. In the backend CMS the content looks like it's there, but when trying to get to the portfolio page from the home page, or clicking to view from the backend...it returns a 404. I have updated the theme to the latest version, but that did not solve it. I even tried to add a new portfolio project - that also returns a 404. It is visible in draft mode but not once published. What could be the problem? There are really no extra plug-ins other than jetpack installed.
This issue is almost always caused by the permalink structure needing to be refreshed after the portfolio post type has been enabled.
To fix this:
-In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Settings > Permalinks.
-Do not make any changes to the settings on this page.
-Simply scroll to the bottom and click the "Save Changes" button. It's a good practice to click it twice.
This action forces WordPress to rebuild its internal URL structure, allowing it to recognize your portfolio project links. After doing this, please try visiting one of your project pages again, and the 404 error should be resolved.
Let us know if the issue persists after trying this.
