    I can't figure out how to add a widget sidebar to the blog page. I have set the page to use Template: Sidebar - Left. 

    In the Salient 17.0.3 Blog > General Settings > set blog type to Standard Blog w/ Sidebar.

    The main page content is narrower but I don't see a widget area on the side of the page.
