My portfolio thumbnails appear initially, but then quickly disappear as I scroll down the page. Also, there is no longer an overlay color behind the text for each thumbnail.
I've tried every possibility I can think of, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Please activate this Plugin and check : https://wordpress.org/plugins/disable-responsive-images/ .
If you have Page Transitions Turned On Please Switch the Animated Transition Method to "Standard" in Salient Theme Options -> Page Transition Section.
Also be sure to check/uncheck this Disable Fade Out On Click option : http://prntscr.com/8f3bj7
