In Salient-Options I've changed the Single Product Gallery Type to "Gallery Slider with Zoom on Hover". It works the same as in your Ascend demo, only the zoom on hover component doesn't work (instead I get the hyperlink "hand" and when I click the main product image, it launches the media item and displays the media upload path in the address bar).
Thank you for your response. I've since discovered that it's because my images weren't large enough for the zoom to come into effect. I've resized my images and now it's all good :).
