It has a heavily customised version of Salient 4.9.
I'd very much like to get the original source/package for Salient 4.9 so that I can derive a child theme from the customisations (and therefore make the theme upgradeable to the later versions).

You can download the original files from Themeforest and setup up the child theme however you like.
Are you unable to get the theme files from Themeforest?
