    My goal is to get the horizontal sort for portfolio items but I also need the lightbox functionality. it seems that horizontal option only shows in the portfolio page while the lightbox only shows in the portfolio shortcode. Anyway to switch on the horizontal for the shortcode portfolio?

     That is not the case . Simply choose the VC Portfolio Options :
